The Don was not nearly as sick as the child. This was perfect gothic romance but with a steamier, sexier edge something I prefer since I stopped reading the more PG rated gothic romances when I was in my teens. The child had been sick repeatedly. A Discovery of Witches Scwrletti Harkness.
Giovanni was a good hero Back when a woman’s only real options were to marry well and 16 was eligible age for marriage. Giovanni is a very interesting hero…tall, dark durse handsome both strong and gentle who will fight the evil that threatens to kill not only him but the women he loves.

She loved the people. It was a great challenge and I loved every minute I spent with the characters. She could feel it arcing and crackling beneath her skin, beneath his, and it made her distinctly uneasy. They also have some special abilities, which, in an era of witch hunts, they keep under wraps. It was the Don Scarletti himself. It flew as straight as possible, up the side of the hills into the grove of trees on the far slope of the mountain.
The palazzo was huge, with gables and towers, turrets and enormous walk ways. Nicoletta knows all too well the curse that plagues the house of Scarletti.
The wind shifts and she senses something is wrong. She was well versed in the role, using it often.
Done Giovanni Scarletti has grown up being trained to be the leader of his people. All in all excellent book. Nicoletta is able to determine that something was tainted in some soup they both ate and is able to heal them.
They’ve been under a “curse” for many generations: The book starts with Nicoletta in the wilderness with plants. This doesn’t really seem to have a tie to the Carpathians in the Dark series but both Giovanni and Nicoletta have certain “abilities” that may mean they had Carpathian ancestry.
But compared to some of her book this was quite tame. Compelled by duty, driven by burning, inescapable desire, Nicoletta surrenders to this powerful, hypnotic scarlehti, giving her body willingly into his keeping.
